What is NJHS?

The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character and Citizenship. NJHS members act as leaders within their school and community, and participate in service projects throughout the school year.

How do I become a member?

To become a member of NJHS, you must be selected as a candidate by your chapter’s faculty council. Students who meet their chapter’s cumulative GPA requirement are then considered a candidate for membership on the basis of service, leadership, citizenship and character.

What are the candidacy requirements?

To be selected as a candidate you must:

  • have a minimum 3.5 cumulative middle school GPA
  • have no more than 2 pink slips or discipline infractions per school year
  • be a 2nd semester 7th or 8th grader
  • be a full-time enrolled student of MMS for at least 1 semester immediately prior to selection

What do I do if I'm selected as a candidate?

You will be asked to complete a candidacy form created and distributed by your local chapter. Membership is determined by a majority vote of the faculty council, following an evaluation of candidates’ qualifications for membership.

How will I know if I am selected for membership?

The chapter advisor will send an acceptance letter to the candidates who were selected for membership into NJHS. If you are selected, you and your family are invited to participate in an induction ceremony. The MMS NJHS Induction Ceremony will be held May 30, 2018 in the MMS cafeteria.

How can I become an officer of NJHS?

There are 4 officer positions available for NJHS: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. In the candidacy packet there is an officer selection page which includes descriptions of officer duties. If you are interested in running for an office, please complete the additional requirements requested in the candidacy packet. During the 1st meeting of the 2018-2019 school year, officers will be voted upon by the society members.
